Rev. E. E. Walker, jr., of the First Methodist church 3 CONC officiated and burial was at Riverside cemetery. Casket bearers were 3 CONC Eugene Porter, Erni Ruhe, Lee Sanner, H. E. Bray, Joe Soper and Dr. L. 3 CONC W. Kellogg. The Masonic Lodge had charge of services at the grave. 3 CONT John Walla Ellis, the son of Lucien and Hilda Dimmett Ellis, was 3 CONC born May 12, 1879 in Anamosa, Iowa, and died Dec. 3, 1945, at Colfax, 3 CONC Washington where he and his wife moved last August to make their home 3 CONC near their daughter Mrs. E. W. Foley. 3 CONT After his marriage to Dessie Soper in 1897, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis 3 CONC moved to a farm 3 miles east of Anamosa where he engaged in farming 3 CONC for 14 years. Upon moving to Anamosa he entered the Cement Silo 3 CONC business with the late Dave Russell, later becoming an accountant at 3 CONC the Reformatory until compelled to resign on account of illness. 3 CONT Mr. Ellis was a Mason, having joined that fraternal order in 3 CONC early manhood. He leaves in passing, his wife; a son, Neal Ellis of 3 CONC Manti, Utah; a daughter, Hilda Margery Foley of Colfax, Wash.: a 3 CONC granddaughter, Margaret Ellis; two grandsons, John Ellis and Wm. 3 CONC Eugene Foley; one great grand-daughter, Lynne A. Ellis; one brother, 3 CONC Lynn Ellis of Westport, Conn.; several nieces and nephews and a host 3 CONC of friends. ELLIS 3 CONT _____________ 3 CONT One of the Best Known and Most Highly 3 CONT Esteemed Ladies of Anamosa 3 CONT is Called Home. 3 CONT ______ 3 CONT 3 CONT After a long and weary illness Mrs. L. W. Wllis has passed on to 3 CONC the new life, her death occurring at five o'clock A. M., Saturday, 3 CONC October 1st. She had resided in Anamosa about forty-eight years, and 3 CONC was the daughter of the well known Dr. and Mrs. J. M. Dimmitt, the 3 CONC latter being in California at present. Her father died in 1860, at 3 CONC the age of 35, of consumption, and his two brothers, Christopher and 3 CONC Milton, and his two sons, Frank and John M., and Miss Cally also, died 3 CONC of the same disease. Mr. and Mrs. Ellis likewise have lost two sons, 3 CONC A. L. and F. O., from the same cause. These bereavements have brought 3 CONC many exceedingly sad experiences to the family and to the community. 3 CONC Following the Comparatively recent decease of A. L. and F. O. Comes 3 CONC the death of their mother, and the sorrow of the thrice-stricken 3 CONC father and husband who can measure? It seems as though the last 3 CONC vestige of hope must be consumed by these fiery ordeals that have 3 CONC fallen so relentlessly upon this family in its past history. How 3 CONC clearly it is seen that human sympathy, however sincere and deep and 3 CONC abiding and comforting, cannot be really adequate to the needs and the 3 CONC longings of such sorely stricken hearts. 3 CONT 3 CONT We have known the deceased (etc. - see article) 3 CONT 3 CONT The funeral services were held from the residence on Monay at 10 3 CONC o'clock, conducted by Re. W. E. Glanville, of the Baptist church, 3 CONC assisted by Re. S. F. Millikan, of the Congregational church. 3 CONT 3 CONT The following sketch was given by Mr. Glanville: 3 CONT 3 CONT Sarah Hilda Ellis was born in Ohio Oct. 23, 1848, and died in 3 CONC Anamosa Oct. 1, 1898, aged 49 years, 11 months and 7 days. She was 3 CONC the daughter of Dr. J. S. and Isabel Dimmitt and granddaughter of the 3 CONC well know Elder Dimmitt. She came to Iowa with her parents in 1850 3 CONC and has lived all her life in Anamosa. On Sept. 4, 1866, she was 3 CONC married to Mr. Lucien W. Ellis. Their children were Albert L., 3 CONC deceased; Frederick O., deceased; Clara D., now in Euorpe; Joel S., 3 CONC John W. and Lynn W. Ellis. GEORGE SOPER 3 CONT --------------- 3 CONT She Was Called Suddenly Last Friday, 3 CONT the 17th, and is at 3 CONC Rest. 3 CONT ________ 3 CONT The sudden death of this estimable lady last Friday as she was 3 CONC about to rise from her bed was a great shock to her family and wide 3 CONC circle of friends. She had been in fairly good health but her work 3 CONC was done and she was spared the weariness, the weakness and waiting so 3 CONC often the lot of earth's pilgrims, and quickly and painlessly passed 3 CONC from thigs earthly to the realms of rest and peace. 3 CONT 3 CONT The funeral services were held in the M. E. church Tuesday at 2 3 CONC P.M., conducted by the pastor, Dr. H. White. The exercises were as 3 CONC follows: 3 CONT Instrumental --- (etc. - see article) 3 CONT 3 CONT Margery Ann Ryan was born September 8th, 1838, at Zanesville, 3 CONC Licking County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Rev. Ira Be. and Cathry 3 CONC Ryan, who, with their family, emigrated to Iowa in the spring of 1810 3 CONC and settled near Wapello. Four years later they came to Jones county 3 CONC and located near Anamosa. With the exception of seven years the 3 CONC deceased was a resident of this county up to the time of her death. 3 CONC She was one of a family of twelve children. Her father was a United 3 CONC Brethren minister and she united with the church in early childhood, 3 CONC later joining the Methodist Episcopal church, and was always ready to 3 CONC help advance the cause of Christ. 3 CONT She was united in marriage to George Soper March 22d, 1857. To 3 CONC their union were born thirteen children, six sons and seven daughters, 3 CONC two of whom died in early childhood. 3 CONT She with her husband and family spent the first years of their married 3 CONC life in Anamosa, their home being located on the block where the 3 CONC Methodist church now stands. Later they moved to Wayne township and 3 CONC engaged in farming. 3 CONT Mr. Soper died October 28th, 1880, leaving her a widow at the age 3 CONC of forty-eight, with eleven children, the youngest being four years 3 CONC old. 3 CONT She was loving, sympathetic and generous, and her hospitality was 3 CONC realized by all who sat at her hearthstone. She was a member of the 3 CONC Woman's Home Missionary Society, the Woman's Christian Temperance 3 CONC Union, and the Ladies' Aid Society. 3 CONT She was a graddaughter of John Ryan, sho served seven years in 3 CONC the Revolutionary war, and at the suggestion of her father, who was a 3 CONC member of the Sons of the Revolution, she with her sister, Mrs. O. R. 3 CONC Harvey, became members of the Daughters of the American Revolution 3 CONC fifteen years ago at Des Moines, and she still retained her membership 3 CONC in that chapter. 3 CONT Being ambitious and blessed with good health most of her life, 3 CONC she was therefore able to accomplish the many household duties which 3 CONC were of vital importance in rearing so large a family. 3 CONT She with her youngest daughter Lola spent three winters in 3 CONC California, and her last great sorrow came three years ago in the 3 CONC death of this beloved daughter. 3 CONT She was unusually brave and hopeful when passing through trials 3 CONC and afflictions, and her faith in God never faltered. 3 CONT On Friday morning she thought that she would rise from the 3 CONC earthly couch, but God said, "Arise and come up higher," and she 3 CONC quietly passed away December 17, 1909, being survived by three 3 CONC brothers, two sisters, ten children, twenty-six grand children and 3 CONC four great grandchildren. 3 CONT Dr. White Followed with appropriate comments (etc. - see article) 3 CONT Mrs. Soper after her long and devoted life on the farm, both 3 CONC before and after marriage, with the toils and privations common in the 3 CONC earlier years and unknown to the present generation, removed to 3 CONC Anamosa, where she reside the larger part of the time for eighteen 3 CONC years. She had been a true helpmeet to her husband and when he passed 3 CONC away in 1886 they had acquired a comfortable competency. Her life has 3 CONC been a genuine illustration of usefulness, devotion and consecration, 3 CONC and these lines give happy suggestion of the new life beyond: 3 CONT (etc.) 3 CONT Those in attendance from abroad were Mr. and Mrs. R. Munday, of Viola; Joseph Doolittle, of 3 CONC Coggan and Andrew Porter, of Center Junction. 3 CONT The pail bearers were all grandsons: Clifford Strawman, Ubert 3 CONC and Wilbur Soper, Arthur, Haryy and Earl Reymore. 3 CONT The children of Mrs. Soper are H. H. Soper, of Anamosa; Mrs. 3 CONC Melissa Reymore, of Estherville; Mrs Ella Strawman, Douglas, J. R., 3 CONC Frank and Charley, Mrs. Wally Ellis and Misses Addie and Jennie Soper, 3 CONC of anamosa. Soper, son of George Soper and his wife, Margery Ryan 3 CONC Soper, was born at the Soper farm four miles east of Anamosa, November 3 CONC 2, 1865, and died December 20, 1931. 3 CONT 3 CONT After the death of his father he took charge of the home farm, 3 CONC which he later purchased and owned at the time of his death. In 1907 3 CONC he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Miller. Twelve years ago they 3 CONC purchased a farm in the Newport neighborhood, where they have since 3 CONC made their home. 3 CONT 3 CONT J. R. Soper was essentially a home man with home interests coming 3 CONC first and claiming first place in his life. Brought up in a pioneer 3 CONC home of very finest Christian tgraining and principles he was true to 3 CONC these teachings during his life which was marked by utmost integfrity 3 CONC and high sense of honor. 3 CONT 3 CONT Surviving to mourn his sudden passing are his widow, Mrs. Emma 3 CONC Soper, four sisters, Mrs. D. M. Strawman, Mrs. J. W. Ellis, and Miss 3 CONC Jennie Soper of Anamosa and Mrs. Melissa Reymore of Cheyenne; three 3 CONC brothers, Horace and Charles of Anamosa dna Douglas of South Dakota, 3 CONC all of whom were present for the funeral services which were coducted 3 CONC by Rev. F. C. He attended the coutry school which was located 3 CONC near his father's home, and united with the Burr Oak Methodis church 3 CONC when a young man and practiced his religious teaching and 3 CONC understanding of it in his daily life. He was also a member of the I. 3 CONC O. O. F. Lodge of Anamosa. 3 CONT 3 CONT He was one of a family of thirteen children, all those living are 3 CONC located in and around Anamosa exsekpt the oldest sister, Melissa 3 CONC Reymore of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Douglas Soper of Edgemont, South 3 CONC Dakota. 3 CONT 3 CONT He was married to Mary Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles 3 CONC Brown of the Antioch church vicinity, October 1, 1906. To them were 3 CONC born three daughters, Lola, Irma and Frances, who with his wife, arfe 3 CONC left to mourn the loss of a loving father and kind provider. 3 CONT 3 CONT Funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Suday, at 2 3 CONC o'clock, Rev.
